Unearthing the voices of Florida solite | Project-in-lieu-of-thesis film
University of Florida | mxd design & Visual communications
Unearthing the Voices of Florida Solite investigates how multimodal storytelling can be used as a design research method to communicate environmental contamination and its lived impacts. Focusing on the former Florida Solite site in Green Cove Springs, Florida, the work examines the intersection of industrial legacy, community memory, and ecological uncertainty.
Through a combination of interviews, visual documentation, and site-based observation, this project centers community voices as a form of knowledge production. These narratives are translated into a short film that explores how residents understand and experience contamination beyond institutional or scientific frameworks.
Grounded in design research and informed by political ecology, this project positions visual storytelling as a tool for making invisible systems visible and fostering public engagement. This informs how design can act as a bridge between technical information and lived experiences. Enabling more accessible, empathetic, and actionable understandings of health and environmental issues.
This film is a student project by UF graduate Alex C. Hackett in collaboration with UF committee members and the Solite Task Force of Clay County Citizens Inc.

Confidence Project
Imposter Syndrome- A psychological occurrence in which people doubt their skills, talents, or accomplishments and have a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as frauds. They may feel incompetent, inadequate, or fraudulent despite having objective evidence of their success or competence.
How to apply Imposter Syndrome to Confidence Project-
Introduction fades from black into the computer screen showing the assigned project. Then transitions into the face of fear, someone who feels that they might not be capable or inadequate to handle the task. Subject then gets up from computer and walks away from it. Subject is then seen pacing around a room contemplating on how to approach the given task, then sitting down thinking about the task. Subject paces around outside in completely different area from last shot and is shown from a faraway point of view contemplating, finally coming up with an idea. Subject goes back to computer and struggles with applying idea to film editing software, only to come up with an idea and not feel confident about it once done.
Dunning-Kruger Effect- Cognitive bias whereby people with low ability, expertise, or experience regarding a type of task or area of knowledge tend to over-estimate their ability or knowledge. This occurs because a lack of self-awareness prevents them from accurately assessing their own values.
How to apply Dunning-Kruger Effect to Confidence Project-
Introduction fades from black into the computer screen showing assigned project. The transition fades from black into subject looking overly confident and scoffing at the project. Subject then gets up from computer and walks away blowing off the project without thought. Subject is then seen doing other things not related to the project and wasting time ultimately going back to the project not knowing what to do and having nothing completed.
